One of the main streets of Melaka ia the Jonker Walk, which is always busy, and especially on weekends as it hosts a night market. The market is a dizzying array of food, crafts, souviners, toys and games, clothes and more. It gets so packed full of people it's quite hard to get through at times. But we enjoyed the experience of it, and the freshly-cut-and-cooked spiral of potato chips were definitely a hit! There was a popular coconut stall at the start of the street, where a group of men removed the coconut flesh and water in a very entertaining way. They cut them expertly and threw the pieces high into the air before catching them in containers ready to be served. It was a spectacle and they were very talented, but I couldn't help thinking that the coconut has its own container that works very well, and that decanting it into plastic creates unnecessary waste. You can see from the picture of the bin that many people don't eat the flesh anyway, they just drink the juice. And there is so much plastic in that one bin, from just one night (that wasn't over yet) in one market in the world. Plastic that has only been used once, and briefly at that. Imagine how much waste we are creating all over the earth on a daily basis, just to be more convienient, or impressive......#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #travelbloggers #sustainabletravel #ecotourism #ecotravel #sustainableliving #malaysia #sustainability #ecotravelling #bethechange #sustainable #ecoblogger #greentravel #ecofriendly #reduce #waronwaste #environmentalprotection #melaka #gogreen #trulyasia #malacca #jonkerstreet #jonkerwalk #jonkerstreetnightmarket #saynotoplastic #reuse #singleusesucks #thinkeco #wakeupworld

This was a great sight to see in a shopping mall! We've noticed some shops selling reusable bags in Malaysia, and this one went further by including a sign too. We have our bags with us and we always have to specify we don't want plastic wherever we shop. It's not so usual here but I think the message is getting through. I hope it does to the supermarkets soon: most of their produce is packed in plastic containers, and even the loose fruit and veg don't escape it. Once you have selected any loose item, you have to take it to a weighing station, where a staff member weighs it for you, pops it in a plastic bag and sticks the price on :(....#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #sustainabletravel #beresponsible #ecotourism #ecotravel #sustainableliving #malaysia #sustainability #ecotravelling #bethechange #sustainable #ecoblogger #greentravel #ecofriendly #familytravelblog #sustainabletravelblog #reduce #waronwaste #environmentalprotection #gogreen #saynotoplastic #melaka #malacca #reusable #reuse #reusablebags #partofthesolution #savetheplanet #thinkeco

New on our blog: all about our first farm stay and the fun we had at Kahang Organic Rice Eco Farm in Malaysia. It was a lovely place to stay! We loved meeting people there, doing water activities and relaxing in the peaceful rural environment. The trishaw riders took us to a historical site that was awesome to visit, especially at night. This gate is all that remains of A Famosa, a fort that was built in 1511! And behind it up on a hill is the oldest church in South East Asia. It was built in 1521 by the Portuguese, and had several renames before becoming St Paul's church in 1641 when the Dutch conquered Melaka. What I loved about it besides the rich history lesson, were the beautiful Dutch tombstones that reside inside (swipe to see some). And arriving by glitzy trishaw, seeing the ancient buildings against the night sky, with the bright lights from the city down below and the wonderful play of light and shadows, perfectly describes this town. Melaka is such a blend of old and new, antique and kitsch, light and dark, restored and abandoned. It really is a fascinating place......#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #bigadventures #melaka #melakatrip #melakacity #malacca #malaccatrip #malaccacityofhistory #unescoheritage #unescosites #malaysiahistory #malaysiatrulyasia #worldschoolers #worldschooling #worldschoolingcentral #ecotourism #travelbloggers #travelwithkids #sustainabletravel #greentravel #travelisthebestteacher #unschooling #unschooled #unschoolers #travelschooling #lifelearning #lifelearner #lifelearners

Tourists, us? No, all the locals get around like this! Super-glitzy trishaws are a big part of Malacca and our kids Dante and Allegra couldn't wait to ride in them. Although they are fitted out with popular characters these days, they really are a traditional form of transportation. There are between 200-300 trishaws in Malacca, and they're only used for tourism these days. Riding in them with loud pumping music (and even louder lights at night) was fun, and a little scary!.....#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #bigadventures #melakatrip #melaka #melakacity #malacca #malaccacity #malaccatrip #malaccatown #trulyasiamalaysia #trulyasia #malaysiatrulyasia #worldschoolers #worldschooling #ecotourism #travelwithkids #kidstravelblog #kidswhotravel #travelmalaysia #travelersnotebook #travelmore #kitsch #trishaw #greentravel #travelblogger #welltravelled #travelkids #wearetravelmums

Whenever people talk about Singapore they always seem to say how clean the city is, so I sort of expected the streets to be sparkling and the air to be crisp and fresh. But it isn't that way. I was surprised at the amount of litter, especially cigarette butts and empty packets everywhere, and also plastic and bottles in most public places we went to. I even noticed remants of chewing gum on the ground, which i thought was illegal in Singapore. Is this a recent deline in standards, or is the perception of cleanliness just comparative to other cities?.....#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #sustainabletravel #singapore #ecotourism #sustainableliving #travelblogger #ecotravel #sustainability #ecotravelling #bethechange #sustainable #greentravel #ecoblogger #ecofriendly #sustainabletravelblog #waronwaste #reduce #environmentalprotection #singapore #trashisfortossers #thinkbetter #travelgreen #zerowaste #sustainable #sustainability #recycle #gogreen #ecofriendly #thinkeco

We made it to our second country: Singapore! It's such a small nation that you can drive from one side to the other in one hour. Couldn't be more different from Australia! We headed out today to get some produce and do our washing, and the laundromat in Chinatown just happened to be close to this magnificent temple. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum is incredibly intricate and justifiably sacred. It also has a vegetarian cafe underneath where we enjoyed a delicious and cheap lunch. I love finds like this, that just work out as you're going about what needs to be done! It was the perfect small adventure for today, as we're still recovering from Legoland :).....#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #bigadventures #singapore #worldschooling #worldschoolers #worldschooler #travelbloggers #travelwithkids #kidswhotravel #kidstravelblog #ecotourism #templeawe #ecotravelling #ecotravel #familytravels #stumbledupon #familytravelblog #familytravelblogger #familytravelbloggers #templevisit #aussieblogger #instatravel #travelgram #southeastasiatravel #travellife #lonelyplanetsingapore

Allegra was helping me get ready for another hot day at Legoland this morning. This is how we do it without relying on buying plastic bottles. We fill up our filter bottles with tap water and refrigerate them overnight, then transfer the cold, filtered water to our insulated bottles to take with us. They keep cold all day and are unspillable too, thankfully! Most places we have been so far on our trip have had filtered water accessible for free. Unfortunately Legoland doesn't, but it's probably pretty standard. We've been at eco-conscious places until now. Hopefully big corporations like this will go green soon. ..#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #responsibletravel #ecotourism #ecotravelling #ecotravel #reusable #savewater #ecoblogger #ecobloggers #travelwithkids #kidstravelblog #kidswhotravel #greentravel #greentravelblogger #reusablewaterbottle #sustainability #sustainableliving #sustainable #sustainabletravel #sustainabletravelblog #stainlesssteelwaterbottle

Thumbs up for the awesome brunch we had here this morning! Organic, fermented waffle batter, home made chocolate hazelnut paste, delicately cooked apple with cinnamon and raisins, and a mushroom omelette to top it off. When this #eco_bnb serves waffles, people come from afar especially for them! Thanks again Keith and Jewel! I have a new post on our blog today, about all of the mistakes we made in setting off on this trip. Hope it helps anyone setting off travelling too! Dante turned 7 yesterday! Our beautiful first-born celebrated in style on our last day on Tioman Island. At his request we went kayaking and swimming, played board games, relaxed a bit, and had a surprise cake with all of our island friends. It was wonderful to have many new friends make such an effort to celebrate his special day :) ....#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #bigadventures #tiomanisland #worldschoolers #worldschooling #kidstravelblog #islandadventures #worldschooler #travelwithkids #travelbloggers #birthdayislandstyle

This is oil washed up in Juara bay. We did a beach clean up this morning and I found lots of cigarette butts (the most common beach pollution) and bits of oil. The oil looks like burnt wood when it's small, but it's soft and sometimes there are larger pieces like this. An adolescent turtle was found dead near here a few days ago; the Project staff did an autopsy and found oil in its stomach. It's is a common cause of death, along with plastic ingestion. Oil seems to be constantly in the ocean. Last year a huge amount of crude oil washed up here: 700 cement bags of it were collected in the clean up. But there have been no major spills since then......#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #environmentalprotection #environmentalism #travelbloggers #protectourplanet #preserveouroceans #greentravel #thinkbetter #greentravelling #greentraveler #sustainabletravel #sustainableliving #ecotravelling #ecotourism #voluntourism #bethechange #responsibletravel #responsibletourism #beresponsible #worldschooling #environmentalhealth #ecoblogger #savetheturtles #tiomanisland #malaysia #savetheocean #saveoceans #juaraturtleproject #juara

I went on the weekly recycling collection today. Juara Turtle Project collects the bottles and cans from recycle bins and cooperating resorts and restaurants along Juara's coast, and takes them to a drop off contact for shipping to the mainland. Staff member Syam here drives the motorbike and a volunteer like me rides on the back. He is pictured at one restaurant's collection point, the next picture is of all that we collected today. Half of that was from just one resort, and most of the recycling is from plastic water bottles. I'm very glad we brought our reusable bottles. .....#smallfootprintsbigadventures #smallfootprints #pleaserecycle #tiomanisland #juaraturtleproject #juara #sustainabletravel #ecotravel #ecotourism #ecotravelling #sustainabletravel #recycler #bethechange #waronwaste #voluntourism #volunteering #volunteeringabroad #volunteerwork #saynotoplastic #trashisfortossers #reducereuserecycle #reusablewaterbottle #reusablewaterbottles #reducewaste #preserveouroceans #environmentalprotection #thinksustainable
