Hysteria. Could we discuss architectural process as one being hysterical? Current opinions in architecture are questioning the stability of the Symbolic Order (the reality in which we exist through the law of language). This unsettling feeling that the object isn’t “normal” (hysterical) could be delivered through misalignment, misusage, shift in scale, misplacing of elements. Bernard Tchumi’s folie ‘toys’ were enlarged to the point of becoming monuments; this scale change makes his objects exist without symbolic meaning. However, indicator of what is “normal” is unsettled; the now starts to define the new normal. Let’s distort, rip, play with scale, deny the normal, and let the grotesque deformation rule your design desires.
