On January 21, 1793, the former French King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine. A week prior, Louis been found guilty of thirty-three charges, including treason, by the Convention nationale. The monarchy was abolished on September 21, 1792. This coin is a silver 15 Sols minted at Lille in 1792. The type reflects the re-definition of the monarchy under the French Constitution of 1791. The French (not Latin) obverse legend proclaims Louis as “King of the French.” The King’s status was changed under the new Constitution – he was now a representative of the French people, rather than an absolute monarch chosen by God. The reverse legend (again in French) “Regne de la loi” translates to “rule of the law.” The design, by Augustin Dupré, shows the winged genius of freedom writing the Constitution. The date “year 4 of Liberty” appears below, reflecting the French Revolutionary Calendar. #numismatics #history #numismatic #coincollecting #onthisday #coin #coins #silver #coolstuff #guillotine #frenchrevolution #revolutionfrancaise #france #louisxvi #monarchy #money #harfordcoin

The monarchy had been abolished on September 21, 1792. This coin is a silver Demi Écu (44 Sols) of the pre-Revolutionary type, minted at Paris in 1792, during the closing days of the reign. The obverse proclaims Louis as “King of France & Navarre,” “by the grace of God.” The reverse Latin legend “Sit nomen Domini benedictum” loosely translates to “blessed is the name of the Lord.” These legends reflect the Ancien Régime belief in the absolute monarch as the living embodiment of the state, and as a representative of God. #numismatics #history #numismatic #coincollecting #onthisday #coin #coins #silver #coolstuff #guillotine #frenchrevolution #revolutionfrancaise #france #louisxvi #monarchy #money #harfordcoin
