Many of you may have seen my story today, in which I was harassed via DM (I have deleted it because I can't bear to look at it) . A lot of you expressed outrage towards this individual. Many of you were shocked that it can get to this extent. I looked at my DMs and saw that I have over 100 messages from you guys, and there is no way I will be able to get through them all, so I decided to make post where we can all interact. I have a few points to make and I hope you will take the time to read and reflect on them. #1. I am tired of people telling me to ignore the person/account/messages anytime something like this happens. I feel that the responsibility to not react is placed on me, when in reality I am human. I am allowed to feel and react, and that should not be taken away from me. If I am being honest, a close friend of mine called me when I put up the screenshots, and I broke down crying. If you have never experienced this kind of harassment over the Internet, it can be hard to imagine why I don’t just delete or block people and move on with my life. The reality is, this kind of stuff stays with you and affects you on a deep psychological level.#2. All my life, I have heard people say that it is normal for girls to be hit on by “guys from India” and that we should just let them be. NO. I absolutely disagree with this. When did we start normalizing the fact that men harass and sexualize women on the Internet? Why do we give these people a pass just because they are from India? Have we ever really thought about WHY these guys have so much confidence to message a girl asking for sex? Whenever I bring up the treatment of women in Punjabi culture, many of you roll your eyes and think “these fucking feminists are always complaining”, but have you ever paid attention? These men have the mentality that women are objects that they have a right to. #3. About a week ago, I made a post about erasure, and how I want to erase myself. Many of you did not understand why, but now you have your answer. I am sick and tired of having to read messages like this (DAILY) and being told that “guys from India are like that, ignore them” or “just block and delete”.
This afternoon, two of our staff members shared their @unleashlab experience from earlier this summer at our first Sustainability Student Lunch of the series. Ariel and Jenna told students about the importance of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as recaps of what they worked on in Copenhagen - from Wax Moth Larvae pâté with the @nordicfoodlab to an investor handbook for hydroponics - all in thinking about SDG #2: No Hunger. #gwfoodinstitute
